Frozen 2K20 Playoff Pool

Rules:

There is a one-time entrance fee of $15.00, which I will require by Friday, January 4, 2019, if you plan on participating.  $14.00 will go towards the back-end pot, $1.00 will go towards the running of the pool and associated costs.  MAXIMUM OF 2 ENTRIES PER PERSON – PLEASE DON’T USE PSEUDO NAMES TO TRY TO GET MORE THAN TWO ENTRIES IN.  IT COMPROMISES THE INTEGRITY OF THE POOL.  Each year, there are 11 NFL playoff games, including the Super Bowl.  Each week in the Chicago Sun-Times and other newspapers, they will give the line or “spread” on the upcoming weekend’s games.  For instance, let’s pretend the Bears make the playoffs this year and were playing the Seahawks in the first round.  Let’s also pretend the Bears were favored by 12 ½ points.  The line would look like this:

Favorite           Line                 Underdog

Bears               -12 ½               Seahawks

What this line shows you is that, if you bet and go with the Bears, you are “giving up” 12 ½ points, meaning the Bears would have to win by 13 points or more for you to win your bet.  In this case, if the Bears win the game 12-0, you would lose your bet, as they did not “cover” the spread.  If the Bears won 21-3, you would win your bet.  Let’s try one more example:

Favorite           Line                 Underdog

Jets                  - 6                    Patriots

In this case, let’s say you put your money on the Patriots.  If so, you would need the Patriots to either 1.) Lose by less than 6 points; or 2.) Win the game.  If the final score were Jets 13, Patriots 9, you would win your bet.  If the final score were Patriots 52, Jets 50, you would win your bet.  If the final score were Jets 29, Patriots 23, you would NOT win your bet.  Since the Patriots did not accomplish one of the two requirements listed above, you would not win your bet.  This would also be true if you had picked the Jets, as they would have needed to win by more than six points to cover the spread.  In other words, EVERYBODY would lose their points on this game, because neither team would have beaten the spread.

While the above explanation was lengthy, I always get tons of questions as to how spreads work, so I thought I would try to explain it up front this time.  If you still have questions after reading this, I will be more than happy to explain it further.

Now, on to the specifics…

You will get to use each number 1 through 11 during this pool only once for your confidence points attached to each specific game.  The difference between this pool and a straight confidence pool is the fact that you will be betting against the spread.  Each week, I will take the spreads listed in the Wednesday Chicago Sun-Times only.  These will be the “official” spreads we will use, as spreads sometimes vary slightly paper to paper.  Even if the spreads change on Thursday or Friday of each week, the “official” spreads to be used for this pool will always be the Wednesday Chicago Sun-Times spreads.  I will send out an email with those spreads each Wednesday morning.  Please note:  If for some reason there is no spread for a specific game(s) on Wednesday, I will consult other media sources as to what the spread is expected to be and determine a “best guesstimate” spread that will become the one we use.

Each week you must a.) List the team you are picking against the spread; and b.) The confidence points you are attaching to that game.  I must receive your picks by the end of day each Friday.  NO LATE PICKS WILL BE ACCEPTED – AT ALL.  If I do not receive your picks by midnight, I WILL TAKE THE HIGHEST POINTS YOU HAVE LEFT AND ASSIGN THEM TO THE AWAY TEAMS OF EACH GAME, REGARDLESS OF THE SPREADS.  THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS.  I will TRY to send out a reminder each Friday, but cannot guarantee I will always be able to do so.  It will be up to each of you to get me your picks on time.

To review the confidence point allocation, once you attach a specific number to a game, you cannot use that number again.  In other words, if you use your 8, 9, 10, and 11 on the first four playoff games, and lose all four of the games, you can pretty much write off any chance of winning.  How you allocate you points, though, is completely up to you!!!

Tiebreaker (PLEASE READ!):

The tiebreaker will be your guess as to the total amount of points that will be scored in the Super Bowl.  I WILL ALLOW TIEBREAKERS TO BE SENT UP UNTIL THE FINAL SUPER BOWL PICK DEADLINE.

What does this mean???:
--It is 100% up to the entrant to submit the tiebreaker with their final pick by the deadline
--I will remind entrants about this once before the final picks are due - that is it.
--I will NOT try to track people down to submit their tiebreaker.

--If you do not submit on time, do not reach out to me trying to get it to count after the deadline.  It will not.

Please remember:  You are now able to submit a tiebreaker with half-points.  In the past, each tiebreaker submitted needed to be a whole number.  You may now submit numbers with a .5 at the end (i.e., 43.5, 44.5, etc.)  So, an example would be if the final amount of Super Bowl points is 45 and one person submits 44 and one submits 44.5, the player submitting 44.5 will win the tiebreaker.  Any questions, please let me know.  Now, on to the good part…

Winner Payouts:

As stated earlier, there will be a one-time fee of $15.00 to participate in this NFL playoff pool, with $14.00 of each fee going to the back-end pot.  Here is how the payouts will work:

1st Place prize – 50% of total pot (minus any “ZERO” payments)

2nd Place prize – 25% of total pot (minus any “ZERO” payments)

3rd Place prize – 12.5% of total pot (minus any “ZERO” payments)

4th Place prize – 7.5% of total pot (minus any “ZERO” payments)

5th Place prize – 5% of total pot (minus any “ZERO” payments)

“Zero Points” Payouts:

Reminder – for anyone that gets ZERO POINTS correct throughout all 11 games, they will receive their entry fee back minus the $1 fee I keep for running the pool.  Therefore, the final payouts to the winners are dependent on whether any entrants got ZERO POINTS throughout the pool.  Hopefully for those people who bomb out in Week 1, you may still have a desire to keep submitting your picks to try to get your entry fee back!

If you cannot pay me in person, I would prefer Chase QuickPay or Payal if you are set up for either of those options.  Please do not mention the pool in the notes – send me a separate email to alert me to the payment.  The payment can be sent to this email:  whiteiceb@hotmail.com.  Otherwise, please send payment of your entrance fee to:

Brian White

490 E Home Ave

Palatine, IL 60074

Again, I need to have the payments/checks in hand by Friday, January 5, 2018.  If I do not receive payment by then, you will not be allowed to participate in the pool.

Please let me know if you should have any questions about anything in this outline.  I understand it was quite a lot to read, but I just wanted to be as detailed as possible.  If there are any individuals you know who were not included in this email that you think would like to participate, please forward this on to them.  If they decide to participate, please just have them identify themselves in the email so I know who they are and what name to list on my spreadsheet.

Thanks and good luck to all!!
